Red, Blue, Green… delicious…nutritious…splashes of color!
I’m referring to POLYPHENOLS. They have a broad range of complex structures and include a variety of fruits and veggies like blueberries, strawberries, kale, nuts, pomegranate, apples and green tea.
You may have heard polyphenols are good for you, but you might not know exactly why.
Polyphenols have powerful natural antioxidants properties that are rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, and proven to have a wide range of medicinal benefits. And because they fight free radicals in the body, they can help:
- promote longevity
- fight disease
- reduce stress
- control mast cell activation
- balance blood sugar
- improve gut microbiome
As you can see, polyphenols have a number of health benefits. but I want to focus on the last call out – impact to the microbiome. Poor gut health can be a major contributing factor to inflammation which we now know is one of the main contributors to health issues and disease.
Addressing gut inflammation is one of the first steps for those dealing with health challenges. Unfortunately, there are many genetic variants that can impact function. Causes of inflammation from leaky gut can include issues with gluten intolerance, dairy intolerance, histamines, zonulin, iron oxidation, poor digestion, and peroxynitrites.
Leaky gut syndrome is a condition in which the gaps between the cells that line the gut expand and allow toxins and bacteria to leak into the bloodstream through the gaps in the intestinal wall.
Fortunately polyphenols can actually make its all the way to your digestive tract, helping to restore balance in your gut microbiome. When its balanced you’ll experience higher energy levels, improved moods and better health overall.
Findings from a recent study suggest that a polyphenol-rich diet reduces the risk of leaky gut. On average, study participants who ate the polyphenol-rich diet had higher levels of beneficial gut bacteria which improved overall gut health, versus those on the controlled typical diet.
Let polyphenols support your good gut bacteria so they can flourish and help keep you strong!
